After qualifying in 2005 from the Onderstepoort Vet Faculty, South Africa Byron worked in Port Elizabeth, a small city on the South African coast, for a year and a half to gain experience before going over to England. Whilst in P.E. he met his future wife who travelled to the UK with me where instead of staying for 1 year we were there for 8 owing to the love of travelling around the country and nearby Europe. The plan was always to end up in Australia where they could enjoy an outdoor lifestyle fuelled up on decent coffee and smashed avo.
“Why did you become a vet?” For me it’s a combination of enjoying problem solving, a fascination for medical related topics, a general interest in animals (my favourite animals are sharks but they are tricky to get onto a consult table), and dealing with people. I enjoy finding out about more about the people that come through as there is a whole world out there and we can see it through your eyes. I have a keener interest in ultrasonography and ophthalmology.
Outside of work he keeps himself active with bread baking, playing guitar, running, homebrewing, snorkelling/SCUBA diving, and finding excuses to sit on the couch with his cat, Gary, to watch some AFL or Tour de France.
"Potts Point Vet Hospital is a fantastic place to work for with a strong focus on care for the animals and attention to detail. Being a vet is not one of the easiest professions but when you work in a place that takes a lot of pride in their work and the people that they serve then it makes the day that much easier".
