7 Reasons to Adopt Shelter Pets

To give a pet a second chance: Rescue animals make great pets. They often end up in shelters for reasons they can't even control: family's moving house, have a new baby, etc. By adopting your pet, you're giving that animal a second chance at a loving home!

To save more than just one life: By adopting an animal you are saving more than just that animal -- you're supporting the shelter which is often home to hundreds of other animals looking for homes.

To have lots of options: shelters are home to all kinds of mix breeds as well as pure-bred dogs! You can find all sizes, shapes and personalities. Shelters also have great matching programs to find the best animal to fit your personality and lifestyle.

To get a great deal: Included in the adoption fee is often the desexing procedure (otherwise costing $200-500 alone) their first round of vaccinations (often $150) as well as first worming and flea treatments ($50 or so.) Given that most adoption fees range from 150-300 dollars, adopting an animal will save you lots of cash!

To combat puppy mills:

Puppy mills (puppy factories or puppy farms) are intensive breeding operations where dogs may be kept in substandard and inhumane conditions.  These commercial dog breeding facilities often sell their puppies through online classifieds or pet shops.

To help needy shelters: The donation fee for your animal goes to the animal shelter, allowng them to help re-home other animals. It goes to feeding, vaccinating and desexing animals in the shelter. Shelters often operate on donations alone.

The Feel Good factor: So you can feel good about yourself. Adopting an animal is one of the best feelings in the world!

Thinking of adopting your next best friend? Here are a few helpful links to organizations that we love:

Monika's Doggie Rescue: A no-kill shelter, rescuing and re-homing abandoned dogs from Sydney's pounds.

The RSPCA NSW:  With 10 shelters throughout NSW the RSPCA helps more than 40,000 injured, neglected, sick, surrendered and unwanted animals each year.

Paws and Recover:   A non-profit organization of volunteers who support people by sharing the care of their pets during a health crisis or difficult times.

Community Cat Carers: A streetcat advocacy group that we at PPVH work closely with on a regular basis.

Check out the PPVH page on pet adoptions. This little guy is roughly 10 weeks old and is currently up for adoption after being rescued from the streets of Potts Point. Stop by and meet him today!
